Reality TV star Peter Andre has been asked to become the next mayor of East Grinstead.
The singer, who owns the popular New York Coffee Club in the town centre and lives in the town, is believed to be considering the approach.
It is thought the offer has been made in the hope that it would boost tourism in the town.
Community leaders are believed to have backed the idea and are excited about the prospect that he may bring big name celebrity friends such as Kerry Katona and Amy Childs to the town.
A source told the East Grinstead Courier & Observer: "Apart from the Queen, David Beckham and Terry Wogan there aren't many people in the world more famous than Peter Andre.
"We think having him as mayor would get a lot of people talking about the town.
"If he attended a jumble sale as mayor it would attract thousands of people - and that's a lot of jumble that's going to get sold.
"We are even hoping that if he's opening a new shop as mayor he might agree to do it with his top off - that six pack and the mayor's chain around his neck would prove a very popular look with his female fans."
